Diego Costa lifts lid on Antonio Conte bust up and admits he ‘tried everything’ to rejoin Atletico Madrid

The striker admits he wanted to move back to his former club before staying put at Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa has revealed his major rift with Antonio Conte started when he was refused a move to Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea striker Costa was desperate to rejoin his former club last summer which gave a bad first impression to Blues boss Conte.

Another row broke in January when Costa was denied a move to the Chinese Super League – although both parties denied an argument at the time

“I’ve done everything to return but I would not fight like that to return. When Atletico had to wait I did not wait.

“The relationship with Conte did not start well because on arrival I told him that I wanted to go to Atletico.

“He got angry with me, almost didn’t looked at me; I would have done the same.

“When Atletico did not wait for me I went with the tail between my legs to talk to Conte.”

Costa has been tipped to make a blockbuster move to China in the summer as Chelsea eye Romelu Lukaku as a possible replacement.

He joked he was studying Chinese during the interview, but refused to rule out a switch.

“Now I’m doing very well at Chelsea but do not rule out anything in the future,” he added.

“In life everything can happen, do not close the door to anyone.”
